This mines glossary collects the terms used across the rest of this site into one place, each defined in a single sentence, so a term encountered on any other page can be checked here without hunting back through a longer explanation.

Grid

The covered board a Mines round is played on, most commonly 5x5 with 25 tiles, with every tile hidden until it is clicked or the round ends. The grid's size stays fixed for a given build; only the mine count chosen on top of it changes from round to round.

Mine count

The number of mines the player sets on the grid before the first click, chosen once per round and fixed for that round's entire length. A higher mine count shrinks the chance of any given click being safe, and a lower mine count raises it.

Safe tile

Any tile that does not hide a mine; clicking one advances the safe-tile counter and steps the multiplier ladder up by one rung. Every tile is either a safe tile or a mine, decided by the round's seeds before the first click, never adjusted afterward.

Multiplier ladder

The running scale, printed alongside the grid, showing what a cash-out is currently worth after however many safe tiles have been clicked so far. The ladder only moves upward on a safe click, or resets to zero the moment a click lands on a mine.

Cash-out

The single choice, available before each new click, to take the multiplier ladder's current value rather than risk the round on another click. There is no partial version of this choice; it is a full stop at the current rung, or a continuation into the next click.

House edge

The built-in gap between a round's true, calculated odds and what a paytable actually pays out, which is how a casino's product carries a structural advantage over time; this glossary entry defines the term only and does not print a figure for any specific operator, covered instead on mines odds and house edge.

RTP

Short for “return to player,” the share of money wagered on a game that is paid back to players over a very large number of rounds, expressed as a percentage and set by a specific paytable rather than by the underlying grid mechanic.

Server seed

A random value an operator's system generates before a round and does not reveal immediately, publishing only its cryptographic hash first so the seed itself cannot be swapped after the fact.

Client seed

A value the player enters or is assigned, combined with the server seed and the nonce to generate a specific round's outcome, giving the player a hand in the calculation alongside the operator.

Nonce

A running count, ticking up by one each time a round is played on an unchanged pair of seeds, so that identical seeds never hand two separate rounds the same result.

Provably fair

The overall commit-reveal scheme — hash published first, seed revealed later — that lets anyone recompute a past round's mine positions and confirm they were fixed before the first click; the full step-by-step version sits on provably fair mines.

How the eleven terms fit into one round

Put in order, these terms trace a single round from start to finish. A round begins with the grid covered and the mine count set. The server seed's hash is published before that first click, with the client seed already entered or assigned, and the nonce marking which round in the sequence this one is. Each click that lands on a safe tile advances the safe-tile counter and steps the multiplier ladder up one rung, until cash-out takes whatever the ladder currently shows. Over many rounds, the gap between what the ladder actually pays and what the underlying odds would pay in a perfectly proportional world is the house edge, and the share of total wagers eventually paid back across all those rounds is the RTP. The whole scheme — hash first, seed revealed later — is what “provably fair” refers to, and it is what lets any one round in that sequence be checked after the fact.

Is RTP the same thing as house edge?
No. RTP is the share paid back to players over many rounds; house edge is the gap between true odds and what a paytable actually pays. The two describe the same underlying structural advantage from opposite directions, and neither figure is printed here for any specific operator.
What's the difference between a server seed and a client seed?
The server seed is generated by the operator and its hash is shown before play, with the seed itself revealed later. The client seed is entered or seen by the player. Both combine with the nonce to fix a round's outcome before the first click.
